Fat Tyre E-Bikes in Australia: A Simple Buying Guide

Fat Tyre E-Bikes in Australia: A Simple Buying Guide

Fat tyre e-bikes are one of the most popular types of e-bike in Australia, and it's easy to see why. They're comfy, steady and happy on sand, gravel and grass as well as the bike path. This guide covers what they're good for, what to check before you buy, and how to look after one so it lasts.

What is a fat tyre e-bike?

A fat tyre e-bike has extra wide tyres, usually around 4 inches across. More rubber on the ground means more grip and a softer, more stable ride. Add a motor that helps while you pedal and you get a bike that makes beach paths, gravel tracks and bumpy streets feel easy.

What fat tyre e-bikes are great for

  • Beach paths and coastal rides. Wide tyres float over sandy patches and boardwalks where thinner tyres can dig in.
  • Gravel, grass and bumpy tracks. The big tyres soak up rough ground, so you can take the long way home.
  • The school run and the shops. A low, steady bike with good brakes feels confident with a bag on the back or a little passenger on board.
  • New and returning riders. The extra stability makes it easy to feel at home on the bike from the first ride.

What to check before you buy

1. Is it road legal in Australia?

This is the big one. A road legal e-bike in Australia is certified to the EN 15194 standard. That means a 250W rated motor, pedal assist that stops at 25 km/h, and a throttle that only works as walk assist up to 6 km/h. Ask the seller for the certificate. If you're in NSW, ask for the NSW certificate number too. Every Mamba e-bike is covered by NSW certificate NSW29849, and you can see all our certificates on our certifications page.

2. Battery size and range

Battery size is shown in watt hours (Wh). The bigger the number, the further you can usually ride. Range always depends on rider weight, hills, wind and the assist level you use, so treat any range figure as a guide. The Mamba Sahara has a 48V 18Ah battery (864Wh) with a range of up to 85 km.

3. Torque for hills

Torque is what helps you get moving and climb. More torque means hills feel easier, especially with a load on the back. The Sahara has up to 90 Nm of torque from its rear hub motor.

4. Brakes

Fat tyre bikes are solid machines, so good brakes matter. Hydraulic disc brakes give strong, smooth stopping with a light pull on the lever, in the dry and in the wet.

5. Weight and where you'll keep it

Wide tyres and a big battery add weight, so think about where the bike will live. A ground floor garage or a spot near the door makes life easy. The Sahara weighs about 33 kg with the battery, and the battery comes out so you can charge it inside.

6. Fit and carrying capacity

Check the rider height range and the maximum load. The Sahara suits riders from about 160 to 190 cm and carries up to 140 kg, rider and cargo together.

7. Local support and parts

An e-bike is something you'll ride for years, so make sure you can get parts, warranty help and servicing locally. Mamba e-bikes come with a 2 year frame warranty and a 1 year warranty on electronic parts, with spare parts and support from our Australian team and our network of Mamba dealers.

8. Take a test ride

Nothing beats riding one. Find a Mamba dealer near you and take the Sahara for a spin before you decide.

Looking after your fat tyre e-bike

  • Keep the tyres pumped up. Use the pressure range printed on the side of the tyre. Lower in that range feels softer on sand, higher rolls easier on the road.
  • Rinse off sand and salt. After a beach ride, give the bike a gentle rinse and wipe it dry. Don't use a pressure washer, and never submerge the bike.
  • Look after the battery. Charge it with the charger that came with the bike, and store it somewhere cool and dry.
  • Check the brakes and chain. A quick look every few weeks, and a service at a bike shop or Mamba dealer, keeps everything running smoothly.

How far will it go on one charge?
The Sahara goes up to 85 km. Your range depends on rider weight, terrain, wind and the assist level you choose.
